mundane mumdays 03.22
Wes and I have always enjoyed the early hours of the day. When spring arrived last year, I would wrap him in a blanket and take him out in the first morning light to listen to the birds. A year later, while most reflect on marking the pandemic, I recount the first few times I started doing this. It makes me happy. We had a cardinal that would visit a few times a day in Fredericton. Here in Guysborough, we have seagulls, loons and a pileated woodpecker that visit us early in the morning. When time allows, we watch the sunrise, too. I think he’s beginning to understand it but even if he doesn’t, he still basks in the morning light at our big window waiting for cars or crows happily.
As for Arlo, he got his four-month jabs and has been minding them. His newly found easy temperament has receded and he is making it known to all that he is not happy. It breaks my heart when they hurt, but I guess that’s the burden we carry as parents.
For the first time in weeks, I felt human. I would venture to guess that the warm weather tends to affect others similarly. I went for a long walk, read a book and drank my coffee on the step in the sunshine with a sleeping baby and I photographed a family. I also went on a “rock walk” with Wes this afternoon. He throws rocks to watch them splash and I tend to throw a worry away with each rock that leaves my grip but both of us return home feeling a bit better in the end.
The next few days are meant to be just as nice as today. The warm light has been lifting the heavy postpartum fog I’ve been navigating through for the past four months and it would be nice to feel a bit lighter once again. Not only was winter dark, but so too was this newborn stage. I hate to wish it away but it has taken its toll and I dare say I won’t miss it.
#MundaneMumdays is a passion project to document our days as Mums, no matter how mundane they may be. I leave cameras around my house on Monday’s as a reminder to capture moments as the day goes on, hopping into the frame when I can. Give it a try yourself next Monday and add the hashtag to follow along.
